The department initially established at graduate level (B.A. /B.Sc.) in 1962 and received permanent affiliation in 1966. Post graduate classes started in 1973 with nine faculty members under able guidance of Dr. R.L. Tripathi.
At present the department is facilitated with research library, computer with internet facility (Wi-Fi). LCD projector with laptop, over head projector, Automatic Weather Station and power backup. The special papers of Agriculture Geography, Settlement Geography and Political Geography are taught at post graduate level.
The department is recognized research centre by Bundelkhand University. Thirty one scholars completed their Ph.D. degree in the diversified field of Geography and 4 scholars are pursuing their research at the centre in the field of Geography of Health, Agriculture Geography and Population Geography.
The faculty members of the department completed five research projects financially assisted by U.G.C. and ICSSR. The department organized seven national level seminars on natural resources, socio-economic aspect and problem of global warming. The diploma and advanced diploma courses on Tourism are being conducted by the department under COP scheme of U.G.C. The Association of P.G. students is actively engaged in different academic activities such as debates, essay writing and other competitions. The system of monthly assessment of students and feed back by the students has been developed and are being implemented.
